Released on ECM in 1979, this is the second album by the original lineup of the Pat Metheny Group, led by Pat Metheny—widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists in the world. The lineup features Lyle Mays (keyboards), Mark Egan (bass), and Dan Gottlieb (drums). Recorded the same year at Long View Farm in Missouri—often cited as one of the most beautiful recording locations in the world—the album was produced by Pat Metheny himself, with Manfred Eicher serving as executive producer. At this stage, Metheny had yet to introduce his signature guitar synthesizer, instead focusing on six- and twelve-string guitars, while Lyle Mays’ Oberheim synthesizers and autoharp provide the album’s electronic textures. Throughout the record, the group’s unmistakable sound unfolds in a finely detailed, luminous sonic landscape—like sunlight shimmering and cascading through the music. A quintessential Pat Metheny Group album, rich in color, clarity, and atmosphere, and a defining statement of their early aesthetic.
