This album was released in 1975 on the Improvising Artists Inc. label, which was headed by Canadian pianist Paul Bley, a central figure in New York loft jazz. Paul Bley, John Gilmore, Paul Motian, and Gary Peacock participated in the recording, which was made in a New York studio in 1964. B2 and B3 were recorded in Seattle in 1968 and feature Billy Elgart on drums. The scores by Carla Bley and Annette Peacock, with the exception of Bley's A2, are unique among the free jazz of the 1960s, which took a leap forward from hard bop. B4, which is also played on Carla Bley's classic album "Dinner Music", is wonderful. Bley's piano has been very distinctive since that time. This is the original US pressing.
