This is a 1972 album by the British rock band Soft Machine, which was formed in 1966 by Daevid Allen, Kevin Ayers, Ryan Nowlin, Mike Ratledge, and Robert Wyatt. Despite undergoing an extraordinary number of lineup changes, the band continues to perform to this day. By this time, Mike Ratledge was the only remaining original member, with Hugh Hopper and Elton Dean among the contributors. Although it's considered to follow the same trajectory as their jazz-oriented albums "3" (1970) and "4" (1971), this album leans even more heavily into avant-garde and free jazz elements, presenting a distinctive brand of jazz-rock. The groove lurking within the psychedelia is on par with Sweet Smoke's masterpiece "Just a Poke"—or is that just me? In any case, it's highly recommended.
