One of the definitive works released on CTI in 1970 by Stanley Turrentine, the great American tenor saxophonist also known for his outstanding Blue Note recordings. The album features Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, Ron Carter and Billy Kaye, along with Lonnie Liston Smith, Butch Cornell and Richard “Pablo” Landrum. From the title track A1, with its deep groove and sweet, mellow atmosphere, to B1, a cover of a John Coltrane classic, this is a superb soul-jazz, jazz-funk and crossover album where Turrentine’s rich, bluesy tenor, Hubbard’s vivid trumpet, Benson’s supple guitar and Carter’s grounded bass come together in a relaxed yet deeply engaging performance. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, the album fully captures the glossy, spacious sound that defines CTI. This is the limited edition released by King Records in 1978 as part of the CTI Original 1500 Series.
