American saxophonist Wayne Shorter, who rose to prominence after joining Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1959 and later became a key collaborator of Miles Davis while also fully showcasing his talent in progressive fusion groups such as Weather Report, released this album on Blue Note in 1965. The quartet features McCoy Tyner (p), Reginald Workman (b), and Elvin Jones (ds). Opening with the emotionally charged A1 themed on Africa, followed by the beautiful ballad A3, and the four-bar exchanges on B1 inspired by China, the album is filled with performances of rare brilliance, suffused with lyrical depth that recalls Shorter’s close friend John Coltrane. A true masterpiece. This is the 1973 US reissue with VAN GELDER stamp on run out.
There are six very small scratches on A1 that cause light popping noises in certain spots. The most noticeable part has been recorded, so please check the listening sample for reference.

A3: House of Jade
B1: Mahjong
B3: Twelve More Bars to Go
