This is the 1985 Portuguese reissue of an album by Archie Shepp, a gem of a saxophonist who, along with John Coltrane and Cecil Tayler, has produced many African-inspired jazz masterpieces, originally released in 1969 on BYG's Actuel series in France. Recorded in Paris in 1969, it features Lester Bowie (tp), Roscoe Mitchell (bs) and Malachi Favors (b) of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, who were living in Paris at the time, along with Hank Mobley (ts), Arthur Jones (as), Sunny Murray (ds), Clifford Thornton (cornet), Earl Freeman, and Laurence Devereaux (balafon). This work embodies the concept of the Actuel series, which is radical free jazz that blows hard while carrying the sentiments of Islamic Africa.
