This is an album released in 1987 by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, a group from Chicago, USA, known for exploring free/experimental jazz rooted in African traditional music, consisting of Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, Joseph Jarman, and Famoudou Don Moye. While original compositions A1/A2 titled "Ancient to the Future" - a key concept in AEOC's music - are of course excellent, this album also deserves attention for its theme, "Dreaming of the Masters," which covers iconic songs from various genres such as Duke Ellington's old jazz to tracks by Otis Redding, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, and Fela Kuti. Particularly noteworthy are the fiercely outstanding arrangements of historical tracks by Bob Marley and Fela Kuti in the AEOC style on B1 and B3. This album was released during the period when AEOC was under contract with Disk Union's DIW label and is available only in the Japanese pressing.
