This is a 1960 album by the tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen, who gained recognition in the French jazz scene after being discovered by Miles Davis during the recording of the soundtrack for Louis Malle's 1957 film "Ascenseur pour l'echafaud." Wilen went on to collaborate with the likes of Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey, establishing his own distinctive presence. The album features recordings from a live performance at the Saint-Germain club in Paris with a quintet consisting of Kenny Dorham (tp), Duke Jordan (p), Paul Rovere (b), and Daniel Humair (ds). Tracks like the cool cover of a well-known Latin tune on A1 and the outstanding piano solo by Jordan on B1 offer a glimpse into the early brilliance of this young genius's groove.
