A little-known yet outstanding gem—the sole 1975 album by Basic Train, a quartet of four musicians active in the Dutch jazz scene: Herman Schoonderwalt (ts, ss), Jan Hydts (el-p, synth), Koos Serierse (b), and Leo de Ruiter (ds, perc). From the opening A1, where wistful soprano lines and electric piano weave a deeply emotive atmosphere, to the spiritually charged jazz-rock of A2 recalling Teruo Nakamura’s classic Rising Sun, the album delivers consistently high-caliber jazz-rock marked by both refinement and groove throughout. Highly recommended.
