This double album captures the live recording of a concert performed by legendary American bassist Charles Mingus, who was active from the early 1940s and left behind numerous legendary performances and anecdotes before passing away in 1979. The concert took place in 1964 at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The sextet features Eric Dolphy (bass clarinet, flute), Clifford Jordan (tenor saxophone), Johnny Coles (trumpet), Jaki Byard (piano), and Dannie Richmond (drums). The album includes five tracks, primarily original compositions by Mingus and Byard, as well as scores by Bennie Green and Dizzy Gillespie. The performances range from light and groovy to moody blues, including a piano solo by Byard. Three of the tracks are extended sessions, each over 20 minutes long. Dolphy's playing is particularly wild.
