Active since the 1940s, Chris Woods, an American reed player, left his mark with works recorded on SP discs, leading his own orchestra in the 1950s. In the 1960s, he excelled in bands led by Dizzy Gillespie and Ernie Wilkins. By the 1970s, he contributed to Carla Bley's masterpiece "Escalator Over The Hill" released by JCOA and works by Charles McPherson. In 1978, Woods released a leader album on Delmark Records. This album features a quintet with Greg Bobulinski (trumpet, flugelhorn), Jim McNeely (piano), Roland Wilson (bass), and Curtis Boyd (drums). Despite its orthodox hard bop style, the album contains hidden gems like the wonderful A2, where the soft melodies of flute and flugelhorn intertwine to paint mystical landscapes. The title track A1, with its urban approach and rapid development, is also highly recommended.
