American pianist Dave Burrell, known for his outstanding performances alongside Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, and Pharoah Sanders, as well as for his remarkable piano duo album with Stanley Cowell released in 1974 on Japan’s Trio Records, released his first leader album in 1969 on the renowned French BYG Actuel series. The album features a septet of exceptional musicians, including Clifford Thornton (cornet), Grachan Moncur III (trombone), Arthur Jones (alto sax), Archie Shepp (tenor sax), Alan Silva (bass), and Sunny Murray (drums), recorded in a Paris studio that same year. A breathtaking masterpiece of kaotic free-form improvisation, with both sides of the record featuring performances lasting over 20 minutes.
