Conference of the Birds
ECM Records/Trio Records (Japan) 1973

A leader album released in 1973 by British bassist Dave Holland, who has participated in numerous ECM sessions and left behind many leader works. This quartet album features Sam Rivers (reeds, flute), Barry Altschul (percussion), and Anthony Braxton (reeds, flute). It opens with A1, overflowing with a flood of interplay, and mainly consists of free jazz with improvisations that vary in intensity. Highlights include A3, where the nostalgic unison of the reeds and the mellow bass lines are very pleasant, and B2, which features ethnic contemporary jazz with an ominous atmosphere and slowly floating unstable melodies. Altschul's drumming is also remarkable.
