A 1990 leader album by German saxophonist Gebhard Ullmann, who has also been active as a member of Gunter Lentz's group and Elefanten. This quartet features Michael Rodach (guitar), Martin Lillich (bass), and Nikolaus Schauble (drums). The album includes covers of legendary artists such as Benny Goodman, Sonny Rollins, Duke Ellington, and Thelonious Monk, but with entirely different, innovative arrangements and performances. This transforms the pieces into edgy jazz rock reminiscent of Bill Frisell, floating contemporary jazz, and aggressive avant-garde jazz. A standout track is B4, a mystic cover of a piece from Miles Davis's historic masterpiece "Kind of Blue," which is highly recommended. Notably, A5 covers a song from Carla Bley's 1977 classic album "Dinner Music" with a relaxed groove.
A5: Ida Lupino
B4: Blue in Green
