Released in 1984, this album is by American guitarist John Abercrombie, who left behind numerous outstanding works for ECM. Recorded in New York that same year, it features an unusual quartet lineup of Jan Hammer on keyboards, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Michael Brecker on tenor saxophone. Highlights include A1, where Hammer’s synthesizer and Brecker’s tenor gently layer their melodies over a reggae rhythm, and B2, where DeJohnette’s aggressive drumming forms a striking contrast with Brecker’s sophisticated, adult-toned tenor. Throughout, the quartet delivers superb performances filled with an urban atmosphere, offering a rich taste of ECM’s distinctive approach to jazz groove. Hammer’s refined playing is equally impressive. Original German pressing.
