This album, released in 1966, features recordings from a 1960 session by a quartet consisting of John Coltrane (tenor and soprano saxophone), Don Cherry (trumpet), Percy Heath (bass), and Ed Blackwell (drums). Recorded after Coltrane left Miles Davis's group and signed with Atlantic, the sessions took place between the recordings of 'Giant Steps,' 'Coltrane Jazz,' and 'My Favorite Things.' These are considered Coltrane's first attempts at free jazz. The lineup mirrors the regular quartet of Ornette Coleman's group, with Cherry leading the overall flow and Coltrane following. The album showcases Cherry's ethnic free jazz style, characterized by his use of R&B and oriental scales.
