American saxophonist Johnny Griffin, who had been active since the mid-1940s with orchestras such as Gladys Hampton and Joe Morris, released his first leader album on Blue Note in 1956. In 1962, he recorded another leader album for Riverside Records. This album, featuring a quintet with Paul Bryant (organ), Joe Pass (guitar), Jimmy Bond (bass), and Doug Sides (drums), showcases recordings made in Los Angeles the same year. From the groovy A1, featuring Bryan's soulful Hammond organ, to the soulful jazz infused with blues and gospel feelings throughout, this album stands as a masterpiece. It also captures the warm atmosphere typical of the West Coast scene. Released as a limited edition reissue in 1995 from Victor's "Analog Meishunshu, Riverside Edition," the sound quality is excellent.
