Keiko Toyama Plays Debussey & Ravel

This is a 1979 album by Japanese pianist Keiko Toyama, one of the few late students of Alfred Cortot, a leading French pianist of the early 20th century. The album features solo piano works by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, composers who represent French Impressionist music from the late 19th to early 20th centuries and who greatly influenced Ryuichi Sakamoto. Side A includes Debussy's Images, Book 1 and Book 2, composed in the early 20th century, showcasing a style that departs from impressionistic expression and sublimates into an abstract approach that marks the dawn of contemporary music. On side B, Toyama performs Ravel's Sonatine, composed between 1903 and 1905, and Valses Nobles et Sentimentales, composed in 1911, evoking the avant-garde elements hidden within Ravel's encounter with classicism.
