This is the first leader album by Lester Bowie, the trumpeter of the iconic Art Ensemble of Chicago, known for their avant-garde jazz with African influences. The album was released in 1967 on the Nessa label. It brings together Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Malachi Favors, and Lester Bowie, who would later form the Art Ensemble of Chicago and move to Paris the following year. The recording captures sessions held on August 11 and 25, 1967. While paying homage to the roots of jazz, the album showcases the embryonic form of the Art Ensemble of Chicago's musical style. The diverse sounds of various instruments, including a variety of percussion, scatter through space like the cries of animals. This recording is a highly valuable document that vividly illustrates the musicality of AEOC, with the template for their sound already well-established at this early stage. Highly recommended. This reissue is believed to have been released in the late 1960s to early 1970s, featuring the front of outer sleeve adorned with the signatures of all the members.
