A superb 1979 album by Brazilian singer Mariama, produced by Ricardo Cantaluppi. The arrangements are handled by Aecio Flavio and Antonio Adolfo. Drawing on compositions by an all-star cast—Chico Buarque, Roberto Menescal, Gonzaga Jr., Carlos Lyra, Tom Jobim, Ivan Lins, Roberto Carlos, and Gilberto Gil—Mariama delivers a sophisticated, adult-tinged blend of mood bossa and jazz, resulting in an outstanding but little-known gem with truly excellent performances throughout. The highlight is the opening track on Side A, a jazz-groove tune reminiscent of Azymuth or Edu Lobo, where her soulful vocals glide over a driving percussive beat, groovy bass lines, and sharply accented piano and guitar backing. Side B features five tracks presented as a seamlessly arranged medley, each treated with refined, tasteful arrangements that offer top-tier adult-oriented mellowness. This is a beautiful 1981 Japanese pressing overseen by Toyo Nakamura, with fuller mid- and low-end sound compared to the Brazilian original.
