This album, released in 1978, comes from the renowned American jazz saxophonist Marion Brown, who had a long and illustrious career from the 1960s until 2000. It's a Japan-exclusive release produced by Yoshiharu Ogasawara, known for his work with labels like Baystate and Denon Jazz. The album features recordings made in a New York studio in the same year with a quartet consisting of Stanley Cowell on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. The album is dedicated to Johnny Hodges, the saxophonist who made a significant mark with Duke Ellington's orchestra. It includes a piece inspired by Hodges' score and offers a modern interpretation of classics by Billy Strayhorn, who was not only a renowned composer but also a band leader for Ellington's orchestra. This album showcases Marion Brown's mature and silky saxophone skills and the refined piano work of Stanley Cowell. Their combination is truly exceptional. Highly recommended.
