Ronnie Boykins was a long-time regular member of Sun Ra Arkestra from the mid-late 50s to the mid-70s, and also demonstrated his skills on sessions with many great musicians, including Sam Rivers, Monty Waters, George Benson, Jack McDuff, Charles Tyler The American bassist also showed his skills on sessions with many famous musicians, including Sam Rivers, Monty Waters, George Benson, Jack McDuff, Charles Tyler and many others. This is his only leader album, which he left on ESP-Disk' in 1975. It features Monty Waters (as), James Vass (as,ss), Joe Ferguson (ss,tb), Daoud Haroom (tb), Art Lewis (per) and George Avaloz (per). A1 has a somewhat arabic atmosphere, A2 has Boykins' deep bass and Vass' soft saxophone floating mysteriously, and B3 has an exotic third-world feel with its rumbling percussion and flute. The influence of his mentor Sun Ra can also be felt in some ways. This is a secret masterpiece album of American avant-jazz in '70s. There is a mis-pressed version with an Albert Ayler song on the B-side, but this is a genuine original pressing. This is hard to find gem.
