This album was released in 1973 from a series of Buddhist sermons and recitations planned by Teichiku Records in the early 1970s. The entire album features recitations from dawn to bedtime at Eiheiji Temple, the head temple of the Soto sect of Buddhism, which was founded in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) when Zen master Dogen brought the authentic teachings of Buddhism from China to Japan. The "Heart Sutra" is a meditation on the minimalist beats of large wooden fish and the overtones of gongs. The Zen meditation "Kosan" also has a very low beat. The sound of flowing water accompanies the sound of the bell in the bedtime song "Kaichinrei". This is both a meditation piece and an avant-garde piece.
