Formed in 1969 in Notting Hill, London, the rock band Quintessence — which included members of Indian descent — released their second album in 1970. This masterpiece vividly showcases the group’s signature style: a fusion of pastoral, country/folk-influenced hippie rock with elements of Indian music such as raga, carrying on the spirit of the Summer of Love in a flower-power psychedelic rock form. Of particular note is the track on Side B1, which begins with a dreamy, meditative flute melody drenched in effects reminiscent of Paul Horn, and then unfolds into radiant flower-psychedelic rock — a true highlight.
