An album released in 1989 by Abdel Gadir Salim, a Sudanese oud player and singer from the Republic of Sudan, a northeastern African country bordering Egypt to the south. Active since the early 1970s, Salim gained wider international recognition during the world music movement of the 1980s, following the release of Songs from Kordofan in 1987. This album was introduced to audiences in Europe and Japan as part of that wave. Featured musicians include Mohammed Abdulla M’hamadia (violin), Gasim Mohhamed Hassein (percussion), and Abdel Hadi (alto sax). The album showcases Sudanese popular music, which not only shares commonalities with the folk traditions of neighboring Egypt and Middle Eastern countries like Lebanon and Syria but also integrates influences from Ethiopian popular music, shaped under Emperor Haile Selassie and influenced by Japanese enka. This fusion creates a unique groove, making the album an outstanding listen. Highly recommended.
