Featured in the first edition of the guidebook Obscure Sound. A 1979 masterpiece by electronic musician and field-recording artist Bernie Krause, who was active alongside Paul Beaver as a synthesizer demonstrator from the early days of the instrument and went on to create numerous landmark recordings. Conceived as a concept album inspired by L. Sprague de Camp’s novel Citadels of Mystery, the record features musicians including Kenneth Nash, Andy Narell, and Mark Isham. Each piece incorporates elements of traditional music from different parts of the world, including Peru, Brazil, Haiti, and Zimbabwe, resulting in beautifully spacious and deeply atmospheric ethno-jazz. The recording quality is superb, with such a vivid sense of depth and space that closing your eyes almost seems to conjure the landscapes behind the music. Original US pressing on Takoma.
