American saxophonist Billy Harper—known for his work with Gil Evans’ jazz orchestra as well as with Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Lee Morgan, and many others, and celebrated for his outstanding playing on rare-groove classics by Leon Thomas and Bobbi Humphrey—left behind this truly exceptional masterpiece on Strata-East in 1973. The lineup includes top-tier musicians: Elvin Jones (ds), George Cables (p), Reggie Workman (b), Julian Priester (tb), Dick Griffin (tb), Billy Cobham (ds), Warren Smith (ds), and Jimmy Owens (tp). The album unfolds as a historic landmark in Black spiritual jazz, blending rich ensemble work and soulful performance with gospel-inflected choral passages featuring four vocalists. The two tracks on side B are especially moving. Extremely highly recommended. This is the Japanese domestic pressing released by Denon in 1978.
