The New Amazing Chico Hamilton Quintet
Passin’ Thru
Impluse! (US) 1967
AS-29 (LP) Orange and Black label. VAN GELDER stamped. Gatefold sleeve. w/company’s inner sleeve.
sleeve : EX(wear on one corner, some small and slightly dirts on inside of gatefold.)
media : VG+/EX-(some slightly noise. side B has some slightly wear and hairlines. A3 has some slightly click noise.)
One of America’s foremost jazz drummers, Chico Hamilton—who performed with Lester Young, Gerry Mulligan, and Count Basie, and recorded exceptional works spanning cool jazz to mellow fusion throughout his career—released this outstanding album on Impulse! in 1963. The quintet features musicians Hamilton himself discovered and helped popularize: Gabor Szabo (g), Charles Lloyd (ts, fl), George Bohanon (tb), and Aal Stinson (b). From the title track “A1,” where delicately shimmering cymbals and a minimally looping bass drive the light, swift interplay of tenor sax and guitar, to the Latin-tinged rhythmic nuances that characterize the entire session, the album captures Hamilton’s distinctive approach beautifully. With VAN GELDER stamp. Likely the 1967 U.S. reissue from the final orange-and-black label era.
A1: Passin’ Thru
A3: El Toro
B1: Lady Gabor
