Known for writing numerous songs for Bobbi Humphrey and Ernestine Anderson, Gloria Coleman was active in both jazz and soul, performing not only piano and organ but also bass. Under the production of Bob Thiele, the architect behind many classic Impulse! releases in the U.S., she issued her first leader album in 1964. The record features a quartet including Grant Green (g) and Leo Wright (as), along with drummer Pola Roberts, a woman who came out of the gospel scene. On this album, Coleman plays organ, delivering a full set of groovy jazz infused with the essence of Black music—soul, funk, and blues woven deeply throughout. A true classic among classics.
