This album by Iqbal Jogi and Party, a group of traditional musicians from the Sindh region of Pakistan, was released in 1974 as part of The Atlas Series by Olympic Records, an American label known for its extensive catalog of folk and classical music from around the world. As the title suggests, the recording features performances on the pungi, also known as the been or murli—an instrument originating from the Indian subcontinent and traditionally used by snake charmers to control snakes. The musicians use circular breathing to perform continuously without pause, producing the instrument’s distinctive timbre and melodic patterns. Both the instrument and the music itself are of great interest from a musical perspective.
