Joseph Celli
Organic Oboe
OODiscs (US) 1978 O.O. records #1 (LP)
sleeve : EX(wear on corner.)
media : EX/EX(some slightly noises.)
An American multi-instrumentalist, Joseph Celli, who plays not only the oboe and English horn but also traditional Korean instruments such as the hojok and piri, as well as the Indian mukhavina, released his first album in 1978 on his own independent label. Celli has collaborated with artists including Jin Hi Kim, a performer of the traditional Korean instrument geomungo, as well as John Cage, Ornette Coleman, and Alvin Curran. The album features highly avant-garde yet organically designed compositions, as suggested by its title. Side A1 layers five elements of the English horn, performed using circular breathing techniques, to create rich overtones. Side A2 presents an innovative realization of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s 1968 score for a solo performer, transmitted via shortwave radio signals for reception. Side B1 features a composition for oboe and magnetic tape, written by Elliott Schwartz for Celli between 1973 and 1974. Side B2 includes a wind instrument piece composed by Malcolm Goldstein for Celli in 1977. An absolute must-have, this album is an undeniable masterpiece from start to finish. Highly recommended.
