This double album, released in 1975 by American jazz saxophonist Marion Brown—who remained at the forefront of the scene from the 1960s through 2000—features two distinct duo recordings. Disc 1 presents material recorded in 1970 with trumpeter Leo Smith, while Disc 2 captures a 1973 duo session with pianist Elliott Schwartz. The album showcases the kind of adventurous spirit characteristic of the ’70s: A2 drifts through space with an array of percussion sounds, and C1 moves from the trippy textures of Schwartz’s ARP synthesizer into a mysterious solo on acoustic piano. Both musicians go beyond their primary instruments, contributing percussion as well, resulting in sessions rich in creativity and intrigue. Highly engaging—and highly recommended.
