This 1980 album comes from the Music Revelation Ensemble, a group featuring saxophonist David Murray—whose striking presence had already been felt across numerous sessions since the mid-’70s—guitarist James Blood Ulmer, highly trusted by musicians such as Don Cherry and Rashied Ali, drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson, known for his work with everyone from Albert Ayler to Bill Laswell, and bassist Amin Ali, Ulmer’s close partner in many sessions. It compiles material recorded the same year at a studio in Düsseldorf, Germany. While the ensemble stays rooted in free-form interplay throughout, the music still follows a clear narrative arc firmly grounded in the jazz tradition—whether it’s the tight beat and blues-soaked groove of A2, or the memorable moment on B2 where Ulmer repeatedly calls out “Danke schön.”

A2: Big Tree
B2: Sound Check
