Pianist Aki Takahashi, whose brother is Yuji Takahashi, one of Japan's foremost contemporary musicians, and who herself has received international acclaim for her performances of John Cage and Toru Takemitsu, is widely active as a contemporary musician, has released the first of three albums of music from a three-disc box set released in 1973. The album includes pieces performed by Toru Takemitsu, Joji Yuasa, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Yuji Takahashi, and Yoritomo Matsudaira. With the exception of Toru Takemitsu's "Unobstructed Rest" and "Piano Distance," all of the pieces were composed for Aki Takahashi. All of the pieces are excellent, but I would especially like to draw your attention to Joji Yuasa's "On the Keyboard," which is an antithesis to the negative opinions about the prepared piano technique in Japan, and Toshi Ichiyanagi's "Piano Media," which is inspired by automated computer performance.
