Album released in 1989 by cellist Allar Kaasik from Estonia, a Baltic country that was part of the former Soviet Union. It features scores by Estonian composer Avro Part, who has also left masterpieces for the ECM New Series, Anne Ellerhein-Metsala, another Estonian composer, and the undisputed German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Avro Part A1 is a suite in three parts, conducted by Peeter Liije and performed by the Estonian State Symphony Orchestra. It is a somewhat inflected state of mind, beginning with the unsettling first part. Ellerhein-Metsala's A2 is a somber and beautiful sonata with string ensemble and organ. Stockhausen's B-side is a conceptual piece written for the 12 constellations, with the length and proportion of each melody matching the individual constellation. Here it is arranged for string orchestra and organ.
A1: Avro Part “Pro et Contra”
A2: Anne Ellerhein-Metsala “Sonata in Memoriam”
