A 1989 release from Amayenge, one of Zambia’s most celebrated groups. Founded in the ’70s by Chris Chali under the name New Crossbones, the band continued after Chali’s passing and went on to receive the Ngoma Music Award in 2005. Their sound is Kalindula—rooted in dance forms of the 1940s–’60s known as Kontrola and Pimpimika, and shaped by a fusion of Zambian traditional styles with 20th-century popular music elements. While sharing DNA with Congolese Lingala pop/Soukous, Amayenge deliver a more primal, deeply danceable drive that’s simply irresistible.
