Released in 1985, this excellent album by American steel-pan player Andy Narell was co-produced with renowned percussionist Kenneth Nash, who has also left behind numerous fine new-age recordings. A3 pairs lightly grooving Brazilian rhythms with the crystalline tones of the steel pan, maintaining a relaxed sense of tension throughout. A4 is equally impressive, contrasting an array of three-dimensionally resonant percussion with primitive Afro chants. Filled with a tropical atmosphere from beginning to end, the album presents colorful steel-pan fusion and stands as one of the finest works in Narell’s discography. The urban Balearic feel of A2 and B3 is especially pleasurable, while the cool and contemporary B2 is another major highlight.
