This album, released by Blue Note in 1961, represents one of the leading drummers on the American jazz scene, Art Blakey, who had been active since the 1930s and had delivered numerous remarkable performances. It features The Jazz Messengers, a group he formed in the late 1950s and led for 35 years. This debut release captures live recordings from a quintet performance at the prestigious New York jazz club Birdland in 1960, with Lee Morgan (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Bobby Timmons (piano), and Jymie Merritt (bass) participating. From Morgan's and Mobley's original compositions to numbers by Thelonious Monk, the album showcases outstanding performances that evoke the essence of nighttime New York. Shorter's presence, who joined as Hank Mobley's successor, shines brightly throughout.
