An album released by Art Blakey, one of the leading drummers representing the American jazz scene, who had been active since the 1930s and delivered numerous stellar performances. Formed in the late 1950s, The Jazz Messengers, a group Blakey led for 35 years, released this album in 1961 on Blue Note. It's the second installment featuring live recordings from a quintet performance at the renowned New York jazz club Birdland in 1960, with Lee Morgan (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Bobby Timmons (piano), and Jymie Merritt (bass). Tracks like the impressive over-14-minute A1 featuring Morgan's muted trumpet and the speedily running B2, an original composition by Shorter, deliver the same electrifying performances as Vol. 1.
