This is a 1988 album release by German pianist Bernhard Wambach, who studied under Konrad Meister, Peter-Jurgen Hofer, and Friedrich Gulda and has performed across Europe, as well as in Israel, Japan, and China and more. This album is the third in a series that features “Klavierstücke,” a collection of piano pieces by Karlheinz Stockhausen, one of the leading composers of contemporary music in Germany, who worked on this composition series as a lifelong project. This release includes "Klavierstück XI," composed in 1956, and "Klavierstück XIII," composed in 1981. The works are based on a cyclical structure that uses a sequence of ordered arrays of notes, ranges, directions, and time scales to create a unique flow. "Klavierstück XI" consists of 19 fragments spread across a single large page, allowing the performer to start from any fragment and proceed to others until reaching the third fragment, which marks the end of the piece. "Klavierstück XIII" was originally composed as a piano piece and later incorporated into a scene from the opera Samstag aus Licht. It employs five layers of sound organized contrapuntally, with not only piano playing but also dialogue and even whistling. Unlike the atonal music of Stockhausen's serial period, these pieces are enriched with musical inflections, making them a fascinating listening experience.
