The sole album by Swiss jazz trio Breath, released in 1980 and featuring Bruning von Alten (ds, perc, vo), who also recorded excellent Afro-jazz works with his own group, alongside Jürgen Seefelder (ts, ss, fl) and Peter Christl (b). Highlights include A2, a cool jazz-funk track driven by side-to-side funky drumming, a thick, grooving bass line, and open, expressive tenor saxophone, and A4, an ethno jazz-funk piece where primitive interplay between percussion and drums is joined by Alten’s earthy, jungle-like scat vocals. Elsewhere, the trio moves into cool contemporary jazz with an atmosphere that at times recalls ECM. A hidden gem of refined, urban jazz fusion with a remarkably wide stylistic range.
