A rare and fascinating title has just arrived. This 1979 album is by Brij Narayan, the eldest son of Pandit Ram Narayan, one of India’s foremost sarangi players. After receiving instruction from Ali Akbar Khan, Brij went on to study seriously under his father and pursued his own path as a sarod player. The album is devoted to Raga Lalit, one of the representative early-morning ragas of North Indian classical music. The performance develops beautifully from the stillness before dawn, gradually building in intensity, while Brij Narayan’s sarod unfolds complex melodic lines with a clear, resonant tone quite distinct from that of the sitar. A deeply rewarding recording that allows the listener to fully appreciate the expressive character of the sarod.
