After moving to New York in the 1960s, American bassist Cecil McBee demonstrated his overwhelming presence in countless sessions and collaborations with numerous musicians such as Miles Davis, Andrew Hill, Sam Rivers, and Wayne Shorter. In 1974, he released his debut leader album from Strata-East. The album features 11 musicians, including Jimmy Hopps (drums), Onaje Allen Gumbs (piano), Lawrence Killan (percussion), DeeDee Bridgewater (vocals), and George Adams (tenor and soprano saxophone). The entire album is a superb collection of black spiritual jazz, paying homage to African soul and culture while expressing a sense of unity with the cosmos. Highlights include the imaginative A1, with two bass solos overdubbed, and B1, where a relaxed Latin beat supports soaring trumpet and saxophone solos and a bright, lively piano. This album transcends time and remains beloved. This is the Japanese pressing released in 1976, complete with an insert.
