This is an album released in 1960 by the legendary American bassist Charles Mingus, who had been active since the early 1940s, leaving behind numerous legendary performances and anecdotes before passing away in 1979. The album features Jackie McLean (alto saxophone), John Handy (alto saxophone), Booker Ervin (tenor saxophone), Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone), Jimmy Knepper (trombone), Willie Dennis (trombone), Horace Parlan (piano), Mal Waldron (piano), and Dannie Richmond (drums). Tracks like the energetically sung A1 and the bass-centric solo showcase of Mingus on A2, along with compositions rooted in blues, gospel, and early jazz themes throughout the album, make it an exceptional piece of work. Highly recommended from start to finish. This is the US reissue in 1975.
A1: Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting
A2: Cryin’ Blues
