An album released in 1978 by American saxophonist Charles Tyler, who joined Albert Ayler’s group in the mid-1960s and participated in the recording of the classic album Bells. In 1967, he released Eastern Man Alone on ESP Disk, and afterward, he traveled across the U.S., taking part in various sessions. This album features an unconventional quintet lineup with Earl Cross (trumpet), John Ore (bass), Ronnie Boykins (bass), and Steve Reid (drums). It opens with a melancholic theme and then plunges into a deep, intense world where free-form interplay unfolds over rock-infused rhythms. A striking and powerful performance. The two bassists—Boykins and Ore—are panned left and right, allowing listeners to experience the unique exchange of bass solos. Even the title, Saga of the Outlaws, evokes a sense of kinship.
