This is the 1977 album by jazz bassist Charlie Haden, who, on the eve of the birth of Free Jazz in California, explored new avenues in jazz alongside Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and others. He went on to deliver outstanding performances through collaborations with numerous artists in the subsequent avant-garde jazz scene. The album features duets with close allies like Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Hampton Hawes, and Archie Shepp. While each track showcases remarkable performances, A1 stands out as an excellent deep jazz piece that links back to Cherry's masterpiece "Brown Rice" released two years earlier. It also connects to the 1979 work "Session in Paris Vol.1," recorded with Masahiko Togashi in a trio setting.
