A superb 1980 album by Swiss-born, Zurich-raised drummer Charly Antolini, who was based in Germany during this period. Backed by a ten-piece big band featuring, among others, Dieter Reith on piano—whose extraordinary 1978 masterpiece Love and Fantasy was also featured in the guidebook Obscure Sound—Antolini delivers a richly arranged and thoroughly satisfying set of big band jazz with a luxurious sound throughout. Highlights include A1, a jazz-funk cut built on a groovy mid-tempo beat and full-bodied brass ensemble, A3, where a light, fast-moving waltz beat is given a Latin feel, and B1, a disco-fusion number with synthesizer touches that recall Herbie Hancock. Particularly recommended is B3, where the laid-back funk groove, slap bass, wah-inflected cutting guitar, and cosmic synthesizer come together to tremendous effect—an exceptionally cool track.
