An album released in 1983 by American tenor saxophonist Chico Freeman, who has left numerous masterpieces throughout his career, spanning avant-garde/free jazz, ethnic jazz, and standards, and is also highly regarded in the rare groove scene. Featuring a stellar lineup including Cecil McBee (bass), Jay Hoggard (vibraphone, marimba), Kenny Barron (piano), Nana Vasconcelos (percussion), and Billy Hart (drums), this masterpiece delivers an outstanding performance filled with soulfulness and spirituality. Particularly recommended are A1, a reinterpretation of a track previously performed on his 1981 album The Outside Within, featuring the deeply emotional vocals of the little-known female singer Val Eley, and A2, where Nana’s distinctive berimbau blends beautifully with Brazilian rhythms, scat singing, and Eley’s vocals, creating an exceptional combination.

A2: Illas
