This is a 1962 leader album by Elvin Jones, an American drummer who emerged on the Detroit jazz scene in the late 1940s, and from the mid-1950s onward, he joind with John Coltrane, showcasing his skills on a number of historic recordings. Thad Jones (cornet), Frank Wess (ft), Frank Foster (ts), Hank Jones (p), and Art Davis (b) participated. The uplifting bop that showcases Jones' signature powerfully rhythmic drumming is also excellent, but A3, a jazz ballad with Wess's flute and Jones's cornet softly layering the melody, is a superb. This music was composed by Sara Cassey, a pianist who was employee of Riverside Records and who passed away at the young age of 37 after leaving behind many masterpieces that many jazz musicians have featured on the album, is the best of all.
