A 1982 album by a quartet led by American vibraphonist Gary Burton, who has been active since the early 1960s and recorded numerous outstanding works for ECM. Featuring Jim Odgren (as), Steve Swallow (b), and Mike Hyman (ds), the album includes compositions by Michael Gibbs, Chick Corea, Carla Bley, and Charles Mingus, alongside original pieces by Odgren. From A1, with its irresistibly light and gently swaying groove, to the fast-paced and aggressive modal jazz of B1, Burton’s nimble vibraphone playing is perfectly matched by the tightly coordinated musicians behind him. Although rooted in a straight-ahead jazz approach, the album is also rich in crossover sensibilities, making it instantly captivating. Original German pressing.
